The empowerHER UK story starts with a young girl who has lost her mother. Founder Cara Belvin formed the United States nonprofit organisation, empowerHER in 2013 out of gratitude she had for all the support her family received after her own mother, Kit, died of breast cancer. Cara was just 9 years old and desperate to meet others who could relate to her loss. Now with the support of countless volunteers + donors around the world, Cara’s “simple” idea has become a reality.
In 2021, with the support of incredible Ambassadors, empowerHER launched in the UK and became an official Charity in December of 2022.
It is our honour and mission to empower, support, and connect all girls and young women who have experienced the loss of a mother. We provide events that remind girls they are not alone in their grief, and a unique one-on-one mentor program with positive role models from the community who help show them that loss is survivable.
- WHAT WE DO -
In an effort to bring girls + young women together on Mother’s Day weekend, and simply build community for those who could relate to the loss of their mothers, word quickly spread. Today, empowerHER UK provides an integrated series of year-round programming, at no charge to the family, in the United States and the United Kingdom.
EVENTS are community-based, volunteer-driven, and non-therapeutic and serve to remind girls that they are not alone in their grief.
Our MENTOR PROGRAM consists of caring + strong women role models who have also experienced the loss of their mothers and help show girls that loss is survivable.
